Tarangire National Park

A real insider tip!

The Tarangire National Park is a jewel. It lies at around 1400 meters above sea level and constantly attracts animals with its river of the same name. In addition to giraffes, zebras and others, huge herds of elephants can also be found here.

The Tarangire National Park with its 2600 square kilometers is not very large – and all the more a little insider tip! It was David Rechsteiner, one of Bernhard Grzimek’s closest collaborators, who was able to convince Tanzanian President Nyerere to establish the park in the 1950s.

The park owes its name to the Tarangire River, which meanders through the entire area from north to south. It is the main source of water in the region and attracts many animals, especially in the dry season from mid-July.

Tarangire National Park is also known as the “Park of the Elephants”. In the dry season, huge herds of elephants can be spotted here. But considerable herds of buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, kudu and the rare oryx antelope also come to the river to drink. If you are patient, you might even come across leopards. They have the best living conditions here. Sometimes they can even be observed in the trees.

The landscape of the Tarangire National Park differs from that of other parks in its seasonally fluctuating swamp areas, seemingly endless tree savannahs and the baobabs that are native to the area. These can reach enormous sizes and impressive shapes.

Birdwatchers will also observe beautiful scenes in Tarangire Park. With its diversity of species, the birdlife here can certainly keep up with Lake Manyara National Park. The swamps in particular offer one of the largest numbers of breeding bird species in the world.

Tarangire Nationalpark

Tarangire National Park, situated at 1400 meters above sea level, is only 114 kilometers from Arusha. Although it is much more than just a stopover, it is still a good stopover on the way to the Serengeti.

As a kind of closer home, it is particularly close to Twende Tanzania’s heart. Let us convince you.
