Lake Manyara National Park – perfect for ornithologists and birdwatchers

If you love water or would like to spot rare birds, you’ve come to the right place in Lake Manyara National Park. Ernest Hemingway famously named it “the loveliest lake in Africa.”

A special euphorbia plant that gave the park its name is remarkable: the Maasai call it emanyara. And then the lake, of course. Depending on the season, it takes up almost two thirds of the 325-square-kilometre park area.

During the waterfowl breeding season the lake is teeming with life. You can see whole swarms of flamingos. But that’s not all. About 400 different bird species have been sighted, from ibises and pelicans to cormorants. Next to them pods of hippopotamus doze – only seemingly sluggish – in the water.

During the dry season, the lake can evaporate to the point where only a few puddles are left. But the park has something to offer even then. Huge herds of wildebeest gather there, for example.
