Tanzania overview

Best safari areas and overwhelming diversity

Tanzania impresses with its scenic and cultural wealth. The country’s safari areas are also considered to be the best in the whole of Africa. A trip to this fascinating country will leave you with lasting impressions.

Tanzania lies below the “horn” of Africa, on the eastern side of the continent. The country is surrounded by eight other states: Kenya and Uganda to the north, Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique to the south and Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west. The coast of the Indian Ocean runs for 800 kilometers in the east of the country. Here, off Tanzania’s coast, lies the famous spice island of Zanzibar.

The rather small capital of Tanzania is called Dodoma. With over 2.3 million inhabitants, it is located almost in the center of the country. Other important Tanzanian cities are Dar Es Salaam on the Indian Ocean and Arusha in the north on the border with Kenya.

Tanzania has just over 58 million inhabitants. The population is relatively young: 44 percent of people are under the age of 14 – the average age is 17.7 years. By comparison, the average age in Switzerland is 40.1 years.

In addition to numerous languages and original idioms, Kiswahili is the main language spoken in Tanzania. English is also widely spoken. Some locals also speak German or French.

Hospitality is cultivated in Tanzania. Around 120 different ethnic groups live peacefully side by side in the country. As a colonial territory, Tanzania was ruled alternately by the British and the Germans for a long time. Western, Indian and Asian influences can still be felt in the country’s cities today. As everywhere in Africa, the contrast between the urban and rural population is also great in Tanzania. Thus, travelers to Tanzania also come across fascinating old cultures and ancient crafts. Encounters with Maasai, Hadzabe or Datoga, to name but a few, are extremely impressive.

Tanzania also offers numerous culinary experiences. A tasty local specialty is “ugali”, a cornmeal dish served with meat, fish or bean sauce. On the coast, seafood, fish dishes with coconut milk, fish curry or various biryani (rice dishes) are all convincing. Another specialty is “halua”, a sweet dessert with almonds, served with spiced coffee or tea. In most places you will also find tropical fruits such as mangoes, pineapples, bananas, avocados, oranges and watermelons. In tourist hotels, restaurants and safari lodges, international food is also usually on offer.

Tanzania’s safari areas are considered to be the best in the whole of Africa. The government goes to great lengths to protect national parks and reserves from poachers. It is also important that safari and tour operators treat nature with respect and pass on this attitude to their guests.
