East Africa’s largest nature reserve! Step right in! Tanzania’s largest elephant population lives here. At over 52,000 square kilometres, the Selous Game Reserve is the second largest game reserve in Africa, larger than all of Switzerland – and a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site.
The Selous Game Reserve: no people live here, but elephants do! The reserve is named after the Englishman Frederick Courtney Selous (pronounced ‘seloo’), who became famous for his big game hunts in the early 20th century. His adventure books about Africa became bestsellers in Victorian England.
In this southern part of Tanzania, the landscape varies from woodlands to open grasslands, interspersed with rocky hills. This is where the Rufiji River has carved out its bed. Its tributaries form a network of lakes, lagoons and ravines. In some places hot springs bubble up from the ground.
During the dry season from June to October, numerous animals gather along the watering points. Crocodiles, hippopotami and grazing antelopes are often seen, and in the forests black and white colobus monkeys. At Lake Tagalala you’ll find waterbuck, reedbuck and bushbuck. And in the grass and bush regions, sable antelope and kudus.
A special kind of drama takes place during the dry season: the ancient migration of elephants between the Selous Game Reserve and the Niassa Game Reserve of Mozambique. It is estimated that over 60,000 elephants roam through the two parks. In the Selous Game Reserve about one third of all wild dogs in the world find their habitat in the forests and savannahs.
