Saadani Nationalpark

Where jungle and beach meet

Beware: your sunbathing could be interrupted by lion roars. Because in Saadani National Park, beach life and wilderness combine to create an extraordinary experience of nature.

Saadani National Park is the only national park in Tanzania that borders the Indian Ocean: It has over 15 kilometers of coastline. The park’s well-preserved ecosystem of around 1100 square kilometers stretches 69 kilometers from south to north and includes the former Saadani Game Park, the Mkwaja Ranch Area, the Wami River and the Zaraninge Forest.

The semi-open forest area of Saadani National Park has similarities with Nyerere National Park. Its vast grasslands are also known as the “Serengeti Ndogo” (small Serengeti). Of course, the park also impresses with its wildlife: lions, zebras, buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, giraffes, wildebeests and many more can be found here. There is also a good chance of catching one of these cute big-eyed bush babies on camera. A boat trip on the Wami River is a must. Nowhere else can you get so close to flamingos, hippos and crocodiles…

Bird lovers can also look forward to some highlights in Saadani, as there are rare migratory birds on the coast – from various species of sandpiper to the Eurasian oystercatcher. Sea turtles also breed on the beach. And off the coast, dolphins and humpback whales often like to put on a little show – another of the many unforgettable spectacles you can experience in Saadani National Park.

Unlike other national parks in Tanzania, here you can combine a safari with relaxed beach life – thanks to the park’s unique location by the sea. There are also numerous villages around the park. Saadani itself used to be an important port city and a center of the slave trade in East Africa. Over time, it has been transformed into a small Swahili village with around 1800 inhabitants whose lives mainly revolve around fishing. Remains of the old harbor town can be visited on a historical tour.
