Nyerere National Park

On “first name terms” with elephants

Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is East Africa’s largest national park. It is home to the largest elephant population in Tanzania. The Rufiji River characterizes the park with its picturesque tributaries and lakes and is home to hippos and crocodiles.

The Nyerere National Park is the first address for an elephant safari. It was established in 2019 from part of the Selous Game Reserve. With an area of over 30,000 square kilometers, it is twice the size of the Serengeti. Located in south-eastern Tanzania, wild and untouched, it is somewhat removed from the better-known safari parks in the north. However, it is easily accessible from the Tanzanian city of Morogoro.

From elephant herds to wild dogs

And it’s worth it. Nyerere National Park is home to the largest elephant population in the whole of Tanzania. On an elephant safari here, you can observe countless of the gray giants. You are also likely to spot lions, giraffes, zebras, baboons, impalas and some rhinos. In addition, around a third of the world’s wild dogs can be found in the forests and savannahs here.

Rufiji River im Nyerere Nationalpark

Rufiji River characterizes the scenery

The landscape of the park is also picturesque. Dense Miombo dry forests alternate with grass and marshland landscapes, sometimes interrupted by bare rock: this is where the Rufiji River has carved out its bed, which can be up to a hundred meters wide. Its tributaries form a network of lakes, lagoons and canals and characterize the scenery. Lake Tagalala, for example, is a beautiful spot where waterbuck, reedbuck and bushbuck can be observed.

Close to crocodiles on boat trips

The Rufiji River is also ideal for boat trips. You can get closer to hippos, crocodiles and numerous water birds than ever before. You will also gain a new perspective on the wildlife on the banks.

Nyerere National Park can be visited all year round. The dry season from June to September is particularly suitable, when many wild animals gather at the waterholes.
