Ngorongoro Crater
A UNESCO World Heritage Safari
The Ngorongoro is the world’s largest crater not filled with water. It has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1979 and has recently also been declared a World Heritage Site. It has a diameter of 20 kilometers – and a large population of zebras, lions, buffaloes and other animals.
A Ngorongoro Crater safari is the absolute highlight of a visit to the Ngorongoro Nature Reserve. On the crater rim – 2250 meters above sea level – you can look down into the vast ground 600 meters below and discover a true natural paradise. Yes, this is Africa’s Garden of Eden!

This is also where the great wildebeest migration takes place: Over a million wildebeest come to calve in the herd migrations from December to July. But many other animal species also migrate through the fertile land. Others – such as lions, buffalo, zebras and numerous bird species – live here all year round. Last but not least, you may also spot a black rhino. Today, around forty of these animals live here again, since they are fortunately no longer hunted by poachers.
Would you like to experience the wildebeest migration? We can help you with the planning.

Not far from the Ngorongoro Crater is the famous Olduvai Gorge, one of the most historic places in the world. It is 50 kilometers long and 100 meters deep and is considered “The Cradle of Humankind”. One of the earliest human-like skulls was found here in 1959: the Australopithexus boisei. Researchers have also recorded many other spectacular finds.

Whether you want to learn more about early human history, experience the fascinating wildebeest migration, observe lions, zebras and birds or spot one of the rare black rhinos: So you will definitely get your money’s worth in the Ngorongoro Nature Reserve. There is also a special place to stay: the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge blends in perfectly with its surroundings and is repeatedly voted one of the best hotels in the world.
