Mount Kilimanjaro National Park

We guide you to Africa’s highest point

With its snow-capped peak, Mount Kilimanjaro National Park is THE attraction in north-eastern Tanzania. Some call it the “shining mountain”, others the “mountain of light”. Either way, it is simply imposing.

Kilimanjaro is the highest point in Africa. It is therefore hardly surprising that it magically attracts trekking enthusiasts. With its snow-covered crater peaks, it can be seen from far and wide on a clear day. Banana and coffee plantations stretch along its southern foot. The northern side is dominated by cedar forests and the vast Maasai steppe.

Kilimanjaro National Park is located between the city of Moshi and the border with Kenya. Immediately to the west is Arusha National Park. The eponymous Kilimanjaro towers in the center of Kilimanjaro National Park. It consists of the three extinct volcanoes Kibo, Mawenzi and Shira. But don’t worry: the last confirmed eruption happened more than 10,000 years ago. An eruption that is said to have taken place around 1700 has not been scientifically confirmed.

The park lies at around 1800 to 5895 meters above sea level. Five climate zones ensure an enormous diversity of landscapes. The lowest lies at the foot of the mountain and consists of grassland with a tropical climate. If you work your way higher, you reach a rainforest region with high rainfall and high humidity. Further up follows a heath and moorland landscape with a rather dry climate. High temperature differences between day and night are noticeable here. This is followed by a rocky area with a dry, alpine climate and finally – around the summit – arctic conditions prevail.

Treckkingtour zum Kilimanjaro

Uhuru Peak on the crater rim of Kibo is the highest peak in Africa at 5895 meters. But even if your destination is not the peak: You can also go on varied hikes, mountain bike or horseback riding tours in the rainforest zone and the adjacent steppe landscape. You will see turacos and other hornbills perched on huge fig trees, stone discs and rainforest trees. And the visit to various tribes puts our mechanized world into a new perspective.
