Greystoke Mahale Camp

A dream of beach feeling and safari vibes

  • Lodge
  • 6 cabins

Greystoke Mahale Camp is one of the most breathtaking lodges in Tanzania: located directly on crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika and at the foot of the Mahale Mountains, it can only be reached by boat. And with its combination of sandy beach, safari vibes and Robinson Crusoe feeling, it immediately casts a spell over the rather few visitors to the Mahale Mountains National Park.

Greystoke Mahale – simply indescribable

The main lodge at Greystoke Mahale Camp is the only large building on the complex. It houses the public guest area with lounge and dining room. The sunset bar is located on the rocks at the end of the beach. Its location also makes it hard to forget the sundowner enjoyed here. The only thing that can surpass this is dinner, which is served partly under the stars on the beach. And of course there is also a campfire where the evenings of indescribable days can come to a fitting end.

The six wooden and thatched bungalows are also located by the lake, but are set back a little. They all have a sleeping area with a large bed, a dressing room and a bathroom with shower and WC. An outside staircase leads to a private sun deck, from where the view of Lake Tanganyika is even more impressive.

Charming chimpanzees

The area of the Mahale Mountains National Park is known for being home to around a thousand wild chimpanzees. There is a group of around sixty animals very close to the Greystoke Mahale Camp. The observations that are possible on guided treks can be deeply moving. The trails are easiest to walk on in the dry season from the end of July to October. The chimpanzees are also closer to the water during this time. In the rainy season, treks are more difficult and longer, as the animals retreat to higher altitudes.

Only accessible by plane and boat

In addition to trekking, you can also go on boat or kayak trips from Greystoke Mahale Camp or explore the underwater world while snorkelling in the lake. However, swimming is only permitted from the boat, as hippos and crocodiles live close to the shore.

Access to Greystoke Mahale Camp is only possible by aeroplane and boat trip. There are scheduled flights from Arusha to Mahale Airstrip on Mondays and Thursdays. From here, the boat trip to the camp takes around 90 minutes.
